An Interview with Chris Babcock
Lets hop in the truck with Chris Babcock, Founder of Napa Valley Hauling, and learn about his hauling and junk removal service in American Canyon, California.
Interviewer: Could you share with me a story about a hauling or junk removal job in American Canyon?
Chris: Sure. We service American Canyon. The client that I’d like to tell you about is a real estate agent that has a listing in American Canyon and also one in Napa.
Chris: The funny thing about this story about the real estate agent – he was one of my first customers. Before I even had a trailer or a dump truck, I just had a Toyota Tundra [Laughs] and I remember, I’d just started my hauling business and I put up some Craigslist ads and I got a call and he was the guy that called me, to do a job in Napa. All I had was my Tundra and I was worried it wouldn’t work well, but in this case it actually worked out great. It all fit in the truck. It took care of the job.
Interviewer: That is a good sign that this is was a good business for you to get into.
Chris: Yeah, before I did the job, he wanted to meet me, so we met at a public space. There weren’t as many junk removal companies near me back then. I was a little bit embarrassed because all I had was my truck but I offered an affordable price and I’m a trustworthy person so he seemed good to go. We shook hands and as it turned out the job all fit in the back of the truck. He was happy with the service that I provided and it kind of went from there. Then I expanded my hauling and junk removal business and it seemed like his real estate company was doing well and he had some listings in American Canyon. We had already started a relationship and he called me up and said “Hey, I’ve got two houses with a bunch of garbage, old furniture and other trash to get rid of in American Canyon. Is there any way you can help me out?” and they were getting ready to sell and I said “Sure”.
At the time I had a dump trailer, so I showed up with the dump trailer and I went into this guy’s place. Me and my employee went in the back of this guy’s backyard and just started hauling away things and getting it ready. With real estate agents, everything is kind of last minute and rush, rush because they’re dependent on their clients’ pace of getting the debris out of there. So it’s always a last minute call.
So anyway, he called me up to see if I could take care of that for him and we were there, took care of the houses in American Canyon and then took away all the debris and it made his life a lot easier because then he could list the house. With that, it helps his business and the client’s happy because they can put the house up for sale.
Interviewer: So is that common with realtors; that they would be listing a house and there might be a lot of junk in the house and so the realtor sort of takes it on to find somebody to haul away the junk?
Chris: Very common, yes. There’s only so many things you can sell cheap or put up for free on an ad and the client is left with a bunch of stuff, and they’re kind of in a rush to get it cleared out so they can put the house up and so they can start showing it. So with us and the hauling service that we provide, we can act very quickly. We can act within the same day or next day service and take care of that for them. So it’s not only helping the agent but also helping the client. It’s a win-win for everybody.
Interviewer: Wow, that’s great. Are there any other American Canyon junk removal jobs that you would like to share about?
Chris: Sure. There is another one I can tell you about. I believe this one I did on my own, it was for a chef of a restaurant. He works kind of late and he was just happy with how flexible we were with working with him and providing our service in American Canyon, with the time he needed it. It didn’t have to be super early. We work with what time works for our clients. He was kind of a late riser since he gets out of work so late. So we were flexible with the time and he was very appreciative of that and we also got rid of the debris for him.
Interviewer: That’s great. The last question I wanted to ask you was, at this point you’ve grown past the pickup truck, right? My understanding is that you actually have a number of very large trucks and that you’ve been in business for a number of years? Am I right?
Chris: Yeah. So we’ve been in business for five years and we have two large dump trucks and the capacity of each dump truck is 22 yards. What that amounts to is eight large pickup truck loads. So we can handle a fair amount at one time.
Interviewer: That’s great. My understanding is that some of the other junk removal companies that do hauling work have smaller trucks than what you have. What is the average size of the trucks that typically offer hauling services?
Chris: So to give you an example, a larger company, like a franchise company, they have numerous trucks. Their trucks are — The highest I’ve seen are 16 yards, and they’re considered on the bigger side for a typical junk removal truck and we have literally 22 yards.
Interviewer: Wow, that is big difference.
Chris: We have them beat by six yards, which is a big difference, yes.
Interviewer: Is that beneficial to have a larger truck in your business?
Chris: Yes, it’s beneficial because we conserve fuel and we conserve time and we can get more done at a property and we can handle larger jobs and with that, the savings that we save on fuel and time, we pass onto the customers. That’s why we are typically more affordable. It’s what allows me to be extra competitive with my price.
